This project lets the creativity of children shine when they make a set of mix-and-match cards featuring faces drawn from their imagination. First, children draw faces on cards, and then cut each card into three pieces. The pieces from several faces can be mixed up and arranged into new, silly-looking faces. Just a few simple materials and a little instruction is all it takes.
Generations of kids have enjoyed playing with mix-and-match cards. Making your own set of mix-and-match cards is amusing, and it's silly fun to mix your set with a friend's. Some of the face combinations are sure to lead to giggles.
Pre-cut cards from the white cardstock. A sheet of cardstock cut into quarters makes good-size cards. Each set of mix-and-match cards requires at least three faces, so each child will need three or more cards.
Draw a face on each card in your set using a pencil. Make sure that the face fills the card and that all of the faces are about the same size on each card in the set.
The faces can include hats, clothing, jewelry, mustaches, glasses, etc. Cartoon-type faces with exaggerated ears and eyes and funny hair are the most fun.
Use a black marker or crayon to go over the pencil lines, and then add a bit of color to each drawing.
Cut each card into three pieces using a paper trimmer or scissors. Make one cut just above the eyes and eyebrows, and the other cut just below the mouth.
Mix up all the pieces, then put them together into new faces. See how many funny faces can be made from your set of cards. Mix your cards with a friend's to make even more funny faces.
Store your mix-and-match set in an envelope or plastic bag.
That's it! How many face
combinations can you make?
