How to Make Simple Father's Day Cards

Read all of the steps before starting.
Step 1: Project Preparation

Pre-cut card and paper blanks. Cut a letter-size ( 8½" by 11" or A4) sheet of cardstock into quarters (4¼" by 5½" or 105 mm × 148 mm). Cut colored craft or construction paper to the same size. For best results, the blanks should have straight sides and square corners.

Tip: Each child needs a cardstock blank and a colored paper blank.

Tip: If you don't have an envelope to fit the card, see Aunt Annie's Envelopes to Make project for printable envelope patterns. The Invitation envelope pattern will fit the Simple Father's Day Cards.

Step 2: Fold, Cut and Glue Frame

To make the frame for the card, you will cut away the center of the colored paper. To do this, fold the colored paper into quarters, then make two straight cuts that are ½" from and parallel to the open edges. The cuts should meet in the corner to form a rectangle.

Open the frame and the center rectangle. Smooth them flat. Set the rectangle aside.

Glue the frame to the white card, matching sides and corners.

Step 3: Cut Out Letters

Cut along the fold lines of the center rectangle to get four equally sized pieces. Fold one piece in half lengthwise and lightly draw half of the letter "A" along the fold. Fold two pieces of paper crosswise and lightly draw half of the letter "D" along the fold. Cut out the letters.

Open the letters and smooth flat. Did you notice? There are actually two letters—the cutout and the cutaway. Both can be used to decorate the cards.

Tip: Show the children how to trace and cut the letters. If they are struggling, draw the cut line on the paper for them, or use a template. Cut out the letters for young children.

Step 4: Glue

Glue the letters to the cards, spelling D-A-D. Arrange the letters in various designs, using both the cutout and cutaway letters. Pick the design you like best.

Tip: Glue the letters with the pencil-marked sides turned down.

Step 5: Add Message and Decorate

Using a pencil, lightly write a message on the card. If needed, erase and write the message again to adjust spacing. Go over the pencil lines with a marker. After the marker lines have dried, erase any visible pencil marks.

Add any additional decorations you like to the front and the back of the card. You can cut out other shapes, draw a funny picture, or use rubber stamps or stickers.

That's it! Your card is ready to give to Dad for Father's Day (or any other day)!
