How to Make a Set of Six Unique Christmas Cards

Read through the tutorial before starting.
Step 1: Stamp Cardstock Stamped cardstock and message cards

The cards are made with patterned Christmas paper and Christmas-greeting message cards. Make your custom patterned Christmas paper with a sheet of light green cardstock and a small pine tree rubber stamp (½" to ¾"). Using a green stamp pad, stamp the little tree all over the green cardstock. To get light and dark trees, stamp two or three times before recharging the stamp on the stamp pad. For a random looking pattern, twist your wrist as you stamp to make images that point in a variety of directions.

Make Christmas-greeting message cards by stamping a holiday message six times on a strip of white cardstock using a red or green stamp pad. For the sample cards, a 2" strip of white cardstock was stamped with "MERRY MERRY MERRY" and a holly stamp. Use whatever message you like and embellish it with small Christmas-themed stamps.

Tip: You can also download and print Aunt Annie's "Merry Merry Merry" or "Jingle Bells" or "Merry Christmas" message cards and cut out. There are 18 message cards per sheet.

Step 2: Cut

Cut the patterned paper into six sections. First, cut the paper into three parts, with cuts across the 8½" width at 3¾" and at 7½" along the 11" side. You now have two 3¾" by 8½" pieces and one 3½" by 8½" piece.

Cut one 3¾" by 8½" piece in half to get two 3¾" by 4¼" pieces.

Cut the other 3¾" by 8½" piece at 5" along the 8½" side to get 3¾" by 5" and 3¾" by 3½" pieces.

Cut the remaining 3½" by 8½" piece at 4¾" along the 8½" edge, resulting in 3½" by 4¾" and 3½" by 3¾" pieces.

Cut cardstock

Cut the strip of stamped messages into six message cards and cut six message card mats ¼" larger than the message cards from red and green stock. Cut one or two card mats 4" by 5¼", a 2"-wide strip, and several ½" to 5/8"-wide strips from the red and green cardstock.

Cut some 1" to 2" squares of white cardstock for stamping with Christmas-themed rubber stamps and some red and green squares for matting them that are ¼" larger. Size the squares to fit your rubber stamps.

Step 3: Assemble Pieces

Glue the message cards to the message card mats. You might also go ahead and stamp the small white squares and glue them to their green and red mats.

Step 4: Make Cards

Now get creative! Use each of the six patterned paper pieces as the central theme of a Christmas card and add a message card, maybe a strip or two of red or green cardstock and perhaps a stamped and matted square to make each card. You might also edge the cardstock with red or green markers. Don't hesitate to pull out your craft leftovers and paper punches as you decorate each card!

Here are the details of how each sample card was assembled. All the cards are oriented horizontally except the first one.

Card 1: Glued the 3¾" by 3½" patterned piece toward the top of a red background mat and added a message card glued at an angle in the center of the patterned piece. A 5/8"-wide green strip was glued across the bottom of the mat and a stamped square was glued in the center of the green strip.

Card 2: Centered the 4¾" by 3½" patterned piece on the card, and glued a message card to the left and below the card's center. Added 5/8"-wide red strip to the left and right of the message card.

Card 3: Glued the 3½" by 3¾" patterned piece toward the right of the card and edged it with a red marker. Added a message card toward the right of the patterned piece. A red ½"-wide strip was glued on the left side of the card with a stamped square at the top of the strip.

Card 4: The 5" by 3¾" patterned piece was cut in half on the diagonal and glued to the card with a space between the two halves. A 5/8" by 4¼" green strip was glued down the center of the card with a message card glued over it in the card's center.

Card 5: Glued a 4¼" by 3¾" patterned piece on the right side of the card and filled the space to the left with a 1¼" red strip and a ½"-wide green strip. A message card was glued toward the card's left.

Card 6: Glued a 4¼" by 3¾" patterned piece in the center of the card and flanked it with two 5/8" by 4¼" green strips. A message card was glued toward the card's lower right and a stamped square toward the upper left.

That's it! A set of six Christmas Cards. Ready to make more?
