Doorknob Hangers

Just hanging around!
Doorknob Hangers
What you will make:

Doorknob hangers are a standard feature of every hotel. One side usually says "Do Not Disturb" and the other side says something like "Maid Service Requested". The guest places the hanger on the outside doorknob to communicate with the hotel staff.

You can make a doorknob hanger to communicate with your family and friends. One side might say "Do Not Disturb, I'm Sleeping Late Today" and the other side might say "Wake In Time for School." You could also make hangers for when you are doing homework or to tell your brothers and sisters to stay out. You could even make doorknob hangers for school classrooms or study rooms.

This project is well-suited for family, group or classroom craft time. With a little preparation by the adult or teen leader, this project will go quickly.

Here's what you need:
  • Poster board or cardstock
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Milk jug lid or other 1½" to 2" lid
  • Optional: Computer paper, clip art, glue, stickers, rubber stamps and stamp pad

This project is rated VERY EASY to do.

How to Make Doorknob Hangers

Read all of the steps before starting.
Step 1: Project Preparation

Gather the materials needed for making the doorknob hangers. If you are doing this project with a group of children, pre-cut the poster board or cardstock to size.

Step 2: Draw

Use the pencil and ruler to draw a rectangle on the poster board or cardstock. Make the rectangle about 3½" by 9" inches. Place the milk jug lid about ½" from the top of the rectangle, centered. Trace a circle around the milk jug lid.

Tip: You could also print Aunt Annie's Doorknob Hanger pattern onto computer paper. Another option is to design and decorate the doorknob hanger using a graphics program on your computer. Check the Tips section for details on these options.

Step 3: Cut

Cut out the rectangle and round the top corners. Cut through one side of the rectangle toward the circle and cut out the circle.

Tip: To cut a smooth, round circle, rotate the rectangle as you cut—not the scissors. Move the paper into the scissor blades as you cut.

Step 4: Write Message

Think about what message you want to write on each side of the doorknob hanger. It could be something as simple as "COME IN" and "STAY OUT". Write your messages on the hanger.

Step 5: Finish

Decorate both sides of the doorknob hanger using crayons or markers. You could also use stickers, stamp images with rubber stamps or print and glue clip art from the Internet.

That's it! Hang it up!
